I'm wanting to upgrade my processor, from a 3.4 ghz 1mb cache P4 to either a Pentium D 3.4 2mb cache or a C2D E6600 2.4 4mb cache. I'lll be handing down my P4 to my son sometime soon. Now I'm not into gaming that much except for like Delta Force and games of that nature. I do burn movies using Nero and I would like to decrease the time it takes to do it. My P4 currently runs around 50 degrees celcius and goes up to around 60 or more when i'm loading the system using this heatsink and fan...

I'm also using the Asus P5B-E motherboard and i'm not sure how good of an overclocker it is.

I just need to know which processor I would be better off with as far as stability, temps and the way I would use it.

Also using these parts

memory - CORSAIR XMS2 1GB (2 x 512MB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit

Video - X300SE 128MB

I know my video card is probably bottlenecking my system some what and will upgrade that as well. And will also get another GB of memory to increase it up to 2GB.

I probably won't be doing this until after income taxes come back so I have plenty of time to decide.

Just give me your thoughts and ideas please.

Thanks for your help

if u wanna save money then the Pentium D would be good because it is a good processor for a low price. however if you want the best performance then the e6600 would by far be the better choice.

the e6600 would absolutely crush either of those processors. no contest. thats netburst for you lol

even the e6300 performs very close, of course take into account how cool it runs which goes along with how overclockable it is... and its 10 times as good, only $183 when i bought it lol, i see its gone up $6... hmm wonder why... could this be a very good processor?

The Core 2 Duo is better by a fairly large margin, but is more expensive. As with all 'what to buy?' threads, this boils down to how much money are you willing to spend?

I just want something that will be dependable, run cool, reduce the amount of time it takes to transcode dvd's(while doing other tasks) and be something that I wouldn't have to upgrade for a real long time..... As far as money goes, the extra 100 bucks won't kill me if I go for the E6600.
