Nehalem Build?

Hi All.

Just found out that my work mates brother works for a computer component Importer here is NZ so I can now get wholesale prices haha.

So Im thinking of doing a complete new build next year (cant now as saving for new years lol)

Just wondering how much you guys know about Nehalem?? Like will the first releases be better than the more high end current Core 2? Will it have a new socket? Etc?

Cheers

From what I have read a 2.94GHz quad Nehalem sample is quoated to be between 15 - 30% faster than a 3.2GHz QX9770 extreme Core 2. They are 45nm but mobos are being made around the X58 chipset (codenamed Tylersberg) and reportedly run in either SLI or Crossfire. These boards will only run with DDR3

Overhaul is gonna be a ton of money when its released. That was enough to convince me to buy Q6600 and keep my head out of the clouds. New mobos, 8-core CPU isnt gonna be cheap, DDR3 memory. I think I will wait until the prices come down to what we pay for quads now :)

actully the eight core cpu is simply going to be a quad core with hyper transit, ddr3, you can pick some of it up for pretty cheap, the most cores a nehalem processor will have is 6, and thats for servers, i think that platform will be called bloomfield

I must be thinking of i7 unless they are the same thing. The performance increase isn't enough for me to upgrade.

So, they're bringing back HT Technology? 16 threads, WOW!

This is is supposedly the Beckton(8 cores) with 24MB of L3... And Quad-Channel RAM, LGA1567(1567 pins). But it's not 32nm, it's 45nm... It's for high-power servers.

I think I will go with that Westmere, 32nm(6 cores and HT). 12MB L3 and Triple-Channel DDR3, LGA1366.

The 8 core might have DDR2 support... Bloomfield is a 45nm Quad... It's actually going to have eight cores but with HT on top of those, so it's actually 16 threads

when the new stuff comes out hopefully the prices drop on the old stuff. I want to pick up a Q9650 or perhaps a Q9550 if the Q9650 still costs an arm and a leg.

That's what happened when Core 2 Duo came out. The P4's were extremely cheap after.

I don't understand why the Core 2 Duo prices haven't dropped more yet... Especially models like the E6550 or E4600, I wonder if it's because they are labeled Core 2 Duo and Core 2 Duo is still one of Intel's working names at present time.

Haha so the 6 core one looks good then, remember Ill be getting wholesale prices, so hopefully it wont be too bad.

Yea... they're still expensive as hell because it's core 2 duo.
