net send domain name

They wont have domain names. If you are running a server, they will be a member of a domain.
If you have a workgroup then each computer will have a unique name. to find out the name of a particular computer, click on "Start", right click on "My Computer", click on "Properties", and then click on the "Computer Name Tab."
This will show you the name of the computer and the name of the workgroup (network).

DNS is most likely resolved by DHCP
in the command line (go to run, then type cmd) do this code
This will display what domain controller you are connect to, you can also use the command nslookup for reverse DNS look up.
You are probably running a work group network and not a domain level network, but if you have a router acting as a DHCP server it will give you an IP to which DNS is resolved from, because technically you are part of your ISP's network.

Yes it is resolved from dhcp though i don't know much about it. I seen another post here from dragon2309. you have to enable the messenger service, this can be found in control panel - administrative tools-services- scroll down to messenger and click start service. only problem this was grayed out. and nothing to click in another box so i can apply it. any other thoughts?

i had tried this morning above information i gave out. today when i came home i tried and turned on the messenger service.
my workgroup name was 'main' i type 'net send main 'this is a test'
still it didn't work. whats missing?

another question if ya don't mind.
the message box came up with 'message from Toshiba to main.
shows date/time.
its a wireless laptop. can this standard message be changed? 'from Toshiba'

The net send works fine except when sending from the main computer (mine) to the laptop and the others in the house. I receive ok and can send except im using Sygate Pro firewall i had to take down (allow all) then i can send. Would you know which file i have to allow to pass through the firewall?
