I am getting about 1.5-2 Thousand dollars USD via inheritance, and something on my list to buy is a netbook. I don't know too much about them, so I would like CF's opinion on what the best netbook to get is. I don't want it for gaming, so the m11x isn't really what I'm looking for. What I want in the netbook is mainly portability and the ability to perform basic tasks (browsers, email, and coding IDE's) quickly and efficiently. Any suggestions?

How much of the 2 G's are you looking to spend?
 
Hi Chugmuffin,

Netbooks are pretty similar. They don't all have build in 3G or Bluetooth, but basically they are same. Of course you can get more with money :D

I suppose I should have included the price range. I wouldn't like to spend more than 1200 or so. Maybe I haven't been looking hard, but all the netbooks I have seen, with the exception of the M11X haven't cost more than $500.
 
my kids bought me one. works fine. Asus 1005HAGN270 (N270) is the key.
Only 1 gig but holds two gig ram. i will update. has a camera, speaker, wireless etc.
very light. what i wanted. only has XP Home. you can step up to another model from Asus.
My opinion .......i use it like you want to. surfing, carry, portable and light. around $300.
Supports cat5, 3 usb ports, has a video output plug (standard). microphone jack etc. recovery disc and install disc.

If you are looking to spend up to 1200, would you consider a laptop? Or do you only need a netbook?

I'm not looking to spend the 1200, that is simply the maximum that I am willing to spend. I have a nice desktop that I mainly use for gaming and such, and all I really need is a netbook. I considered a laptop, but I think a netbook would better suit what I am looking for.
 
I second that notion. Something with an SU4100 like I have is tremendously more powerful than your average netbook. Though I'd also look around at the sizes. I'm using a 13.3" now. I've tried a 10.1 and 12...whatever inch and they're too small for my liking.

Really? I never thought too much of those ones because of the low frequencies, but if thats the case that's very good to know.

Edit: Oooh, it's dual core.
 
Even the single core ones out perform the Atom's, but yeah, the dual core ones are quite good. For average computing, I really can't complain about mine. The only time it ever really lacks is with Photoshop. Mine will play 720p videos off Youtube smoothly, too. Though I'm sure that's also partly because of Flash 10.1 (GPU acceleration)

I just checked since I never tested this machine with superpi (or the like) Total computation time in Y-Cruncher at 32M was 68.803 seconds on my Toshiba with the SU4100.
