netgear router poor bandwidth

I recently had to replace my good modem/router with a netgear DGN1000. Now I can surf the net at my regular speeds or I can download and my regular speeds but I cannot do both at the same time as I could on my old router. Is there possibly a setting on the netgear that is causing the poor bandwidth or is the device just not capable? I should note that I live in Australia and my internet speed is not fantastic so I wouldnt have expected to max out the routers capabilities.

Not a very good unit there. You would have been better off getting a modem and then separate router.

true, unfortunatly i have a very limited budget and had to settle for what I could get.
