HI, was looking at purchasing one of these NETGEAR NETWORK STORAGE CENTRAL DRIVES.

http://www.netgear.com/Products/Storage/NetworkStorage.aspx

I know this type takes IDE drives, anyone ever used it and got any opionons on it? Also anyone know if a similar type but that takes SATA?

Also am i right in thinking you can allow this to be accesible online via ftp or such like. anyone with suggestions on them or info be much appreciated.
Thanks

I have seen a couple USB to SATA converters, but none in enclosures. Same goes for NAS devices(as they usually double as USB enclosures as well...)

I wouldn't suggest an NAS device. I typically hear poor things about them. Of course, the performance isn't going to be too swift over the network. However, they also seem to be limited to FAT32. I don't know if that one is, but the majority of the ones I've found are.

I have seen some that allow FTP access. I don't know for sure if that one supports it, but I think many do... But all in all, I just hear they are rather buggy.

Have you considered using something like some old PC on your network?

Thanks for response.

I have currently a usb 160gb wester digital, thinking of getting the netgear as be faster to transfer to and also comes with some software that auto backup and just thought be better for backing up. just IDE is getting old now which is what puts me off slightly..but yes i have seen ide convertors, but dont think they would fit inside that casing.

How would the Netgear be faster? Network transfers are slower than USB 2.0. As for IDE, what's wrong with it? You're not going to get anywhere near SATA speeds on USB or though a network. Most hard drives barely hit SATA speeds.
