Hi, im a new user and is having trouble with my wireless network. I am not very computer literate so any advice would be appreciated. I have a Netgear WGR614 and I am with Virgin.I live in a bungalow and my router is in my dads room and my room is opposite and my signal is always dropping or cutting off and it started doing this only recently. Im a student so I don't have much money but i'm not sure whether to buy a signal booster or upgrade my router. Any suggestion will be appreciated.
Thanks Amy.

How far is it between your computer and the router? How many walls?

Cordless cell phones operating on 2.4GHz can interfere with wifi signals, so might try relocating the base.

You could also try changing the wifi channel. Look at the bottomof the router and it will tell you how to access it's menu (and change your password, while you're at it).

Netgear wifi routers have historically had issues with overheating, so make sure it is in a well-ventilated area (shut up in a closet is not a good idea, in other words).

If this just started recently then need to look at what changed.
Physical location of router, furniture moved, wireless phones (including neighbours), other routers with power output cranked, microwave (yep, believe it or not)
What can be done.
Free stuff:
1/reverse what has changed if you can find the cause.
2/go to router set up and make sure the frequency(s) are set to auto. If they already are, you can change and experiment for the most stable.
3/Move router as close to your location as possible.
Small cost but pain in a$s:
4/Go with hard wire.
Money:
5/try different router. Make sure you buy from dealer which has a 30 day return policy with no questions.

Thank you for the replies much appreciated. To Dngrsone, it is roughly 20ft from the router to my laptop with one concrete wall, that is the closest I can get it. It is well ventilated and I have changed the channels and still had no luck :( . I think my best option would be (long term) is to buy a new router but I can't seem to find a shop that sells Linksys routers locally. But Thank You for the replies.

That concrete wall may be the big factor here, particularly if there is metal running through it (rebar, electrical wiring, plumbing, etc.).

Any chance you can drill a hole through the wall in an inconspicuous spot for a CAT 5 cable?
