Nettops

Hey everyone new to the forum and i have a some of questions regarding nettops. I'm currently running a very old Compaq PC (AMD Athlon 64 processor 3500+,991mhz,448MB Ram...) and im looking at getting a nettop to hook up to my lcd tv. I already have a ps3 so im not too worried about gaming but i would like to be able to run stuff like second life which is something i can't do on my current pc. will that be possible?

Also will i be able to watch catch up tv on itv4, sky, 4od etc smoothly?

What about surfing the net and light multitasking?

And lastly will i be able to run stuff like google earth and video and music editing software?

Also if can anyone explain to me the difference between windows 7 premium 32 and 64 bit that would be greatly appreciated.

The model i am considering is Viewsonic VOT132 or somthing with a similar spec

Out of those surfing the web might be the only thing it does well, it might be adequate for the other stuff but it's really pushing it, my lil bro's got a Lenovo netbook with Atom and for anything more than surfing, word processing and the likes it's pretty much useless.

The Atom 330 is a Dual core, and the ION platform has a Geforce 9400M, which can use CUDA. It'll be fine. I've seen several games being played with that setup, one of them being MW2.
 
Over all netbooks are kind of junk. I mean that look right for some people but for most I think they will be very unhappy with them. On the flip side, it's good you are looking at one with 2GB of RAM that is key. But I'd look for a netbook with an Atom 450 processor minimum. I am not sure how much gaming you will be able to do on them, light gaming like card games and stuff is ok but no WOW or anything like that.
 
^ The 330 is the dual core version of the 270/280...much more powerful than the 450. I forget what the Dual core version of the 450 is...D510 or something. He's looking for a nettop...basically a tiny, atom-powered desktop. The dual-core models are easier to find on those.

You're right though, on average Atom-based systems have the lowest life span of any type of computer.

yeah, but with that price, you probably look very near to a regular laptop
 
It sounds like that setup is fine for Web surfing and light multitasking. I've been running the single core Atom N270 for some time on my netbook. You would definitely enjoy lower electric bills with such a lightly-powered system. I'm not sure how well Second Life will run with that video card though. It seems right on the edge, but maybe OK:

For what it's worth my netbook uses about 450 MB of RAM with Windows 7 32 bit when idle. Perhaps you can test drive a few netbooks at a local retail computer store? The reason I keep saying netbooks instead of nettops is because it is likely they would be in stock and they are very similar in performance.
 
We have a little netop at work I really want to play with, but it's yet to be powered up (just on display). But I suspect with ION and duel core, it probably wouldn't be that bad. Many applications are beginning to use some GPU acceleration which is what really killed the previous generation of netbooks and such.

However, if you just want a small computer that's pretty powerful, I built one for my dad recently that has a Celeron e3300 in it. Those would similar destroy any Atom processor. Then pop something better in than the 8400 he's using and it'd be a fair machine.
