Network 4 computers

Hey all,

I need to create a Personal Area Network (PAN) with 4 computers that are in very close proximity to each other. I'm mainly interested in connecting them using bluetooth technology.

TBH, I've never made a network with computers before so I could really use the help.

The main thing I'm looking for is:-
- Suggestions for wirelessly connecting the PC's.
- Some info on security protection.
- If it's possible to connect two PC's in different rooms using bluetooth.
- Drawbacks for using bluetooth over other connection methods, both wireless and cable.
- If you were to do a similar thing, what requirements would you have for your PAN/LAN ?

If you can think of anything I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks in advance.

your gonna get a headache from trying to setup 4 computers over bluetooth, it would be much easier to set them up over wired/wireless ethernet, not too much that bluetooth is going to give you unrealiable and slow connections and not particularly good range either.

Well the range isn't that important.

I've chosen bluetooth because the dongles are relatively cheap, it seems easy to install and basically it's technology that I'm interested in but haven't played around with yet to date. Also, speed isn't of the greatest importance. That said I wouldn't mind playing a game over the network.

Would you mind further detailing why it's so 'slow'? .. 1Mb p/s ain't that bad surely, I'm not looking to transfer big files across it.

The main use I want it for is to share the internet. If in the near future my internet speed exceeds that of bluetooths capability then I'll probably just use the dongles to interface a PC with a laptop.

Ring network - Simple but unreliable as all computers will have to be on.

If you are on the cheap, buy a HUB, not a switch or a router and connect them with low cost cat5 cables. will save you some cash.

wireless-g adapter are not expensive, if you do some looking you could probably find one for 20-30 bucks, plus a cheap router would be maybe 40-50 bucks

With that its much easier, you get faster speeds, its expandable, and you can have more security

im not aware of bluetooth networking too well, i just know it exist and thats all, but you could also have to learn to use static IPs which could compliacate things when trying to get on the net, with a router you can just use the built in DHCP server and everything is set

good luck!
