hi guys, ive just had broadband connected and want to link my desktop which is upstairs to the router that is downstairs using an ethernet cable, theres a hole in the floorboard where a phone extension cable use to be, the only problem is that it runs alongside two hot water pipes, will this add interference and reduce the connection quality, im sure ive read somewhere that it does, i would also like to know how long can the cable be before i loose connection speed

thanks in advance

A 10/100/1000+ baseT ethernet cable can be 100m long before you are supposed to have a repeater (or end point of some kind). I don't know if hot water pipes will cause interference but I'd imagine it would be ok especially if the phone line was there and it was fine.

My whole house i network, and in each room has a network port.

I'm in a double story and the CAT5 is running past electrical cables and phone cables in the wall, and we have had no interference at all.

So i don't think you will have a problem.
