network cable unplugged

I've done system recoveries for friends and family for a while now but I ran into this problem that no one "professional" can seem to solve, nor can I find anyone with a similar problem.
I can't connect to the internet on my home pc, although the laptops are working fine. It keeps saying network cable unplugged and I've checked the connections and re cycled the power. I do notice that in the device manager it says that no drivers are installed for the ethernet controller. I went on the manufacturer's site and downloaded a network driver (it was the only thing there) and nothing. I contacted gateway support and they insisted that I do what I already did.....still nothing. What is going on?
My computer is a gateway GT5404 and I have DSL running windows vista.

If you are getting network cable unplugged, you have the driver already installed. The problem you may be facing is either a bad ethernet cable, bad network card or incorrect driver installed(has happened before). Go into the device manager and let me know what is listed under network adapters.

Under network adapters it has Intel PRO/100 VE Network connection drivers installed. When I went to the manufacturer's website that was the only one listed for my specific computer, as a matter of fact, a support technician told me to download it (even after I had already tried it). I don't think the card or the cable is bad because I can get internet just fine on any other computer or device in the house.

May be a silly question but is the Ethernet lead connected to the correct socket?

What I mean is do you have another network connection that may be disabled?

LOL Eureka! Well I knew that I needed a driver for the ethernet controller so what we did was take the comp apart and look at the model and found the driver for it and installed it, and Walla! Internet connection. Thanks for your help anyway. :)
