Network connection keeps d/cing

Hey guys,

friend of mine is having this problem. His network connection in vista keeps cutting out for no obvious reason every 10-30 seconds, but it will reconnect usually within 2-5 seconds. However sometimes it will work fine, and sometimes not at all. Originally he thought it might be the onboard lan, which he was using, so he bought a simple pci network card, same problem occurs with the new card. He's tried different cables, different ports on the modem ( Linksys WAG54G). Also other computers on the network are working fine, and don't experience this problem at all. Any ideas? Cheers.

Strange,

Try forcing the ethernet to 10mb/s Half duplex. This is normally a cabling or faulty port/card issue. It might be trying to run at 1Gb/s failing, and returning to 100mb/s. If both sides support the higher speed it will keep retrying. See properties for the card in device manager. It would be best to force on both sides to the same speed if your router allows you to do this. I would swap the computer with a working one, just make double sure the fault follows you and the cabling/port/socket is 100%

sorry to revive this old thread, but after trial and error with various other computers, we've found that it seems to only happen on vista computers D:
