Network Connections missing

The problem I'm trying to fix is the same as in this KB article. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/825826

I've gone through all the possible resolution steps but nothing has fixed it. I haven't called Microsoft yet and I would like to avoid it if I can.

The motherboard is a GA-73VM-S2, paired with an Intel Pentium Dual Core (don't remember the model number, it's one of the cheap Core 2 based ones) and 2GB of RAM (iirc it's Corsair).

I'm thinking the problem lies in the nvidia network driver but updating it didn't help. Has anyone seen this before?

I have the exact same problem on my daughter's computer, Dell XPS 400 running XP Pro. We used to have a share file so we could share music and I could print her homework. I had to re install XP on her rig and now I can not get any network connections, I have been trying for weeks but I can not connect them. There is no icons and the computer does not read any network connections. My computer (Vista Home Pre 64bit) can see her's just fine but she can't see mine. Her internet works fine but it will not even show an icon for that network connection!

I have tried the trouble shooting steps in that same article but I have about given up. I have deleted and installed the network drivers also many times but still nothing.

Those are the same steps in the MS KB.
Make sure that there are no nonpresent, ghosted, or hidden network adapters in your computer.
I had a problem with this step. There is a hidden/ghosted and non-present adapter called RSA Async (or something close to that, I can't log into the machine from here). I tried to remove it but windows said that it was required to boot and would not let me.
