How fast of a nic do i need? my motherboard specs said it was 10/100/1000 but the store only had one that said 10/100 is this the right speed?
 
100 Speed will be fine.

Just make sure your switch / hub / modem / router supports that speed.
 
they are all backwards and forwards compatible, they jiust run at the speed of the slowest link in the chain
 
Unless you move a lot of data between computers on you're own home network, you won't notice a difference from the cheapest NIC on the market and the name brand NICs. Unless you have a crazy fast internet connection, you're always going to be limited by the speed of your ISP rather than the speed of your NIC.
