Network Issue?

I've posted on a few different forums now and no one can seem to help. Are the linksys USB wireless adapters unreliable or did I get a bad one?
What it is doing is intermittently losing connection. I don't know much about networking but it seems to me like it stops communicating with the pc or vice versa. The connection icon in the corner stays on as if I have normal connection but I can't do anything. I have to unplug the adapter and plug it back in to reset the connection. The thing can stay on for quite awhile sometimes or it will go out everytime I try doing anything online. I don't know what else to try, I've searched and searched but I don't know what exactly I am trying to fix.
I am connecting through a linksys router with one other computer directly connected to the router. Any help is appreciated thanks.
 
I've experienced many headaches w/ wireless USB adapters. :rolleyes:

What OS are you running? Are you within good range of the router? What sort of wireless security settings do you have in place?

As far as the adapter goes, you should first check what other networks are broadcasting in your area. Just scan for networks from your adapter and look at the list. If these are on a channel on or close to the channel your router is operating on, I would change the channel to a less "crowded" frequency. This happened to me for some time, but after changing channels everything works great.

You say it spontaneously loses the signal, and the above may very well fix that. Also, is the adapter on a USB extension cable? If you plug those USB adapters directly into your USB port, they can overheat and lose connectivity.

You may also want to try updating your driver - the manufacturers site would be your best bet. Get it here: http://www.linksysbycisco.com/US/en/support

I'm running windows xp. I believe to be within good range of the router. I have a friend with a laptop that gets good signal with no problems. I have the latest drivers and tried changing channels. The adapter is on like a 4' extension, not sure the exact length. Thanks for the reply.
 
That doesn't answer my question. USB wireless adapters tend to not be strong enough to give you good signal in certain areas. Thats why i'm asking you about how far are you away from the router and how many walls are in the way or elecronic appliances?
 
Yes, electronic interference could be an issue. Also, if you have access to another USB adapter, try using it and see if you have the same problems. If not, well there's your answer.
