network monitoring checklist

Hello,

I am looking into creating a tasklist for monitoring a network or server and was hoping to find some example tasklist which i could use. However some months ago I found some stuff on the web and now I just cannot find it.

e.g.

Check OS patches are up to date
Check Messages in event viewer on the server
Check temperture of the server room
Check virus definitions are up to date
Monitor space of HD

and so on.

I guess I could create my own, but its always good to check other task lists or whatever they are called. Could anyone tell me the name of such a document? Or has anyone come across such a list?

what OS are you running? If you are using a Unix/Linux OS you can just set up cron to run tasks for you, so you don't even have to do it.

There are like a billion things to keep on top of too

firmware updates (for all hardware, including networking hardware)
proper configuration (of all networking equipment)
proper software configuration

The best kind of security is layered, so start off with a NAT and hardware firewall then work your way back to a client work station and make a list of everything in between to secure.
