network monitoring software

I need a free software that will basically send pings to a host and if it fails or time outs I want to be able to see what time that happened. And It needs to be able to run 24/7 while pinging about 30 hosts.

Have you ever heard of nagios. It's a free monitoring software that's designed to run on a dedicated box to monitor your systems. (Linux based)

Try smokeping.

OR:

go to dos and do a ping host.com -t (will ping infinitely)

and run wireshark at the same time with input/ouput bandwith graphs

yeah, but i've seen continuous ping have time out issues after running a while just because the host gets overloaded even though it doesn't go offline. Besides I think he's looking for a periodic check rather than a continuous monitor. I dunno, what sounds better? In addition, what's smokeping... I've never heard of it.

I like getting emails to my blackberry when servers become unresponsive. I don't use any of the other features as I have a network guy that does all of that.
