Hey guys.

My brother and I have had our computer networked for a while, but recently, we unplugged it.

We have been using the wireless network, but its way too slow to transfer files.

Now we tried to connect via cable, but we cant connect to each other. What could be wrong?

We have made sure everything is enables, but we cant connect.

thanks for the help guys

Are you connecting each other directly without using switch?

And make sure the workgroup is same in both pc.

Are you hooked up via Cat5 cable from lan port to lan port? You will need a crossover cable to do that, not a regular cat5 cable.

We on the same workgroup.

And by switch you mean?

You can't use a regular ethernet cable. It has to be a crossover cable, google it.

Not true any more really. Most modern NICs auto sense what is going on and switch the cable automatically.

Most likely if your computer is new enough to have built in gigabit Ethernet ports most likely your Ethernet port will auto sense the cable type.

didnt know that myself!
Anyway it the most likely cause of the problems are this stage,

Also when you say "trying to connect to each other", can you be more specific, what have you tried and how did it fail

As long as they have the following for windows networks:

1) Same subnet (the network browser won't search across subnets but you can manually connect)

2) file sharing is enabled

3) No duplicate computer names

4) same workgroup

I have noticed that Vista's (if they are using Vista) network browser sucks and that I have to manually type in the computer name I want to get access to at home. For exmple I have a computer named Odin and one named Thor and often times I have to in a browser window type \\Thor because the built in network browser will not pick it up.
