ok so im trying to connect my desktop with a laptop via crossover cable.
ok, i set manual ip range to 192.168.1.100 as laptop and .200 as desktop.
from laptop i ping desktop i get all reply.
from desktop i ping laptop i don't get anything.
Antiviruses are off and so is the firewalls.
(useless to share folder on laptop cos desktop won't see but vice versa it works)

what is causing my desktop not to get the laptop ?

(note that i tried 2 laptops but i had the same probs, so the problem is with the desktop C but where ?)
(someone once told me its taht you need to modify a registry key to fix this but i dunno which one?

Depending on how your router is setup.. some routers only allow 50 addresses or gives 50 address at default. So try .149 or under.

there's no routers Computerhakk, you're confused,i said using crossover cable.
desktop connecting with laptop over a crossover.
i've been trying since last night but cant figure what is blocking my desktop from accessing the laptop

are both pcs set up for file sharing? sounds to me like the laptop might not have it fully activated and isen't allowing other users to view files on its hard drive.

also, what versions of windows are you using?
i've had the exact problem with xp seeing not other computers on my network, one of them being xp and the other win2k. win2k pc could easily access the 2 xp pcs so would have to use it to move stuff around.

so, if you can't get it to work, just use the laptop to place the files onto your desktop since it can see the desktop.

i've already share the files on my desktop and used the laptop to copy.My operation is done here. BOTH is XPSP2 and both are sharing folders and both are on the same workgroup.
the laptop is 'activated'..like you said.
i can't seem to understand the theory why my desktop can't see the laptop !!
but the laptop see my desktop !!

yes tlarkin, they are on the same subnet. it's 255.255.255.0.
sorry for not replying cos i've not been able to get the laptop home again.its for the office..lol

hhmmm... sounds like somehting more basic... try these, first change the desktop IP to 101 instead of 200. If still not working, from the desktop ping 127.0.0.1, you should get all responses, if not you may have a bad nic, then try pinging 192.168.1.101 (it's own IP), you should get all responses, if not then TCP/IP may be partially corrupt , (if thats the case use the Winsock fix utility).

both is xp sp2, i will try what byteman said later.

(note : over a router with dhcp address my desktop pc sees, shares and ping the laptop)

that doesn't tell me if it is XP Home or XP Pro, there is a difference in how they file share actually.

try to set both pc to dynamic ip addressing.

then run ipconfig /all on both systems and verify that the ip addresses
are both 192.168.1.xxx

next ping 127.0.0.1 on both to see if if tcp/ip is working
next ping the ip of the system to see if the nic is working
next ping the ip of the other system to see if the connection is working

you may want to try another crossover cable if the last ping does not work

its the only way you can go from Nic to Nic.
beside why would a domain mater the crossover cable only crosses the send pair with the receive pair just like hub or switch ports do.

also when you connect a pc to a Cisco router you have to user a Crossover
as you can see from the bottom link in my sig i have a singel system connected to a router on my Domain, it is connected with a crossover cable

to tlarking : sorry for the wrong info, they are both windows XP PRO SP2
to Deepblue : yes, i will do that later (only on weekends)
to garethcia : dude im not on a domain ,re-read my thread

thanks for all suggestions but i get the laptop on weekends only.

so when you use a direct connection, via cross over cable, you set the workgroup, the ips, and the sub net manually?

yes.i set ip to 192.168.0.100 for desktop and .200 for laptop.
subnet is 255.255.255.0 is do not put gateway or dns as i disable internet
when i connect the 2.

ok since today is friday, the start of weekends, my thread is on...lol
laptop is home.
i think it has problems when the IP is on the 192.168 range
because now i put the laptop on 10.39.1.156 and desktop on 10.39.1.155
and it works.
desktop can now ping laptop and share folders..
cool no more probs. PR solved...lol
