Network proxy or firewall

I'm having trouble deciding whether to just use my internet gateway/DNS/ server also as a proxy server which will provide firewall protection or just basically use a dedicated network firewall application like kerio winroute.

I running linux OS (I know winroute is only for windows i just gave an example of the kind of network firewall i was talking about)

Yes you can use it for all the purposes, linux works well handling multiple function on 1 PC.
once you have installed whichever linux distro you're gonna use, you can install WEBMIN, link here, it makes the process simpler.

But i won't advise you to make a PC a proxy/dns/fireewall at the same time cause what will happen when this pc blacks out ?

If you are running linux then check out firestarter. It's an open-source for linux that works very well.
