network scanning

Hi Guys and Gals:D
I have a Canon mp360 all in one printer, scanner, copier. I have three computers all connected via a hub, all running XP. I can print from any computer but can only scan on the computer that the printer is connected to. If I try to scan something from one of the other computers I get a message saying that there is no scanner connected. Can anyone out there explain why I can print and not scan.:confused: I am assuming that if I can print I should be able to scan or copy as it is an all in one.

and why would you want to scan from, say a computer 100ft away from the scanner? you would have to walk back to to scanner to refeed it!
 
Thanks for you replies chaps but lets assume that I want to scan, lets say a photograph, onto one of the computers other than the computer that the all in one printer is attached to. Maybe I wanted to add text to the photo or make a copy or enlarge it for example. If I appear to be a bit dumb then perhaps I am:D but I was just wondering if I could scan from another computer that can print to a network printer but appeared not to be able to scan on the same machine.

why don't you just scan it from the computer with the all in one and then put it in a shared network folder? or do I not understand?
 
you can scan from anywhere in your network... but you have to know how to connect everything.. Printing is different from scanning BTW. When you print from a comuter, your network is configured to send the print job to the print server (whichever PC is it) and it sends it to the printer. A scanner on the other hand has to scan and send data to a certain computer/server, after having done that you can access it on any computer. Remember its a network, anything is possible. Read your manuals and use google. Maybe I'll drop by later and see if i can help you my self! good luck chap!
 
Blacklabelrum you are a star. I couldn`t understand why I could print and not scan, but now I do. Thank you Sir! Now all I haveto do is work out how to do it!:confused: I`ll get there somehow.:D

you cannot network scanners without 3rd party applications, it cannot be done, it is not possible with windows alone. Its a common misconception, it can't be done.

Using TCP/IP scanners is a different story, they are extremely expensive, sometimes into the £1000's they simply plug into a Cat5 ethernet port and run as a network device.

i think you could get a router with a built in usb port (the kind they use for pluging normal printers in) you should then be able to hook up a printer/scanner multi device with a normal USB inteface and use the scanner from a different machine, provided the vendor software allowed you to specify that the scanner was on the virtual ports through the router (just like you do for the printer)... never done it.... but sounds doable
