Network Speed

I have a Laptop connected to new Netgear wireless router, Windows 7.
Why does my "Wireless Network Connection" box tell me it is only running
54.0Mbps ?
Signal quality good.
IPv4 Connectivity

Wireless g is only capable of speeds up to 54 mbps although your internet provider might not offer speeds that high.

The router has Wireless n and the laptop is new with Windows 7, can I change it and is there any point?

Check the router settings to see if its broadcasting only wireless G, See if changing it to N will give you better signal quality. Usually the only benefit of using Wireless N is if you plan on tranferring files between machines on your network.

Thanks. the router is set to b+g. I have only the laptop and a printer on the wireless, so it will not serve any purpose to change it. My internet downloads at about 2.66 mb/s how does that relate?
