Network speeds

I have a wireless network with a D-Link N router. According to the network monitor in Windows I am connected at 54 Mbps. I have 2 computers in the same room. One I use for daily tasks and the other is a file server only. Both are newer units with lots of ram and cpu speeds. I just installed a brand new 500 gb drive in the server and when I transfer files across the network they go at 1.2 mbps. Why is there such a discrepancy between network speed and actual speed and is there anything I can do to speed it up?

This is only your router maximum speed.
Your data transfer speed is limited by hard drive read/write speed.
