Network thing

Hi

When I plug a cross cable into two computer on which runs WinXP it should automatically recognize and create a network. Shouldnt it?

Just asking because on my machines nothing happens after plugging the cable.

If I am forgetting something to do before the plug or after it please note me...

Thank you for help

The machines have self assigned IP addresses and you need to manually set them up on the same subnet, ip range, and work group. Google will answer how to do all of that.

No, it doesn't. The only time the computer will set the settings automatically is if you have a DHCP server and/or a router which is set to assign DHCP.

If you are just using a crossover cable, you need to set the IP, subnet, and gateway manually.

I set one of my computers to 192.168.1.1 the second 192.168.1.2 and the gateway just the other way. (of course the mask which sets itself)

Still nothing has changed no sign of a network and I have no idea why.
Shall I set the preffered DNS server?
