network trying to connect, and disconnecting repeatedly

Im in college. I have xp pro, nic is installed correctly, I can ping the nic, i've tryed slowing down the speed. Tryed both ethernet ports in the room. The LED's on the nic do light up. When I tryed installing two spare nics they didn't appear to be working. (No LED's)I cant think of anything to try anymore. Im thinking it may be a nic issue, but i want to make sure. Thanks for any recommendations.

Think it may be a slot problem? What seems to be the problem, you can't connect to the internet via an ethernet cable?

That was the problem. I even tryed two brand new cables. But lastnight i decided to make my own. And it worked.
