can i do a network upgrade from a shared cd rom drive over the network to a PC ? the pc to be upgraded cant use its cd rom so i shared mine.
it is a windowsXP home and i will make it a windows XP professional

It should work if the bios on your board support network booting. I've shared daemon drives for office installs and other apps, but never an OS install.

You will find it a lot easier to use the drive in the computer itself then to share a drive from a different system. Why can't the existing drive be used? Is it broke? Get a new drive if it is, less hassle and time consuming...

also if i connect external cd drives it shows up as unkown devices. it alsohas viruses which im trying to sort out right now

Yeah, but when your computer restarts it needs to be able to find that drive.

No worries. I did it and i'll tell you how. I used the boot disk of win98 and win98SE itself. I booted from the floppy, loaded cd-rom drivers (which worked), formatted C drive, coppied 98 setup files to C drive. Run the 98 setup.
Presto works.

After windows 98 was installed i reformated again and installing XP.

NOTE : while 98 may be dying and MS not supporting it.Its a good idea to have its boot diskette and its cd
