Network

I had a wireless network that worked intermittently - so I thought I would wire it via ethernet. I have ethernet cards in both pcs, have bought an ethernet switch (which I thought I needed), have connected with cat5 cables and the second computer does not connect. I have a wireless router if that can be of any use or am I just missing something. Many thanks for any help as really needed by novice.

:D

A switch does not maintain a connection to the internet...

We need to know how you wired it.

Modem-->Router--->Computer1-->Computer2

or

Modem-->Router--->(Computer1 and computer2)
This shows 2 connections from router to 2 computers

i think he means he disconnected the router and is now using a switch with it like

PC1 PC2

INTERNET

The problem if that is your setup is that the computer don't know what IP's to use, the problem is that there is no longer a DHCP server giving your computer an IP address...

I set it up as follows

modem > ethernet hub/switch > computer 1
> computer 2

do I need to use a router as well? I do have a wireless router (could I utilise that?)

thanks for your time

Yes, like viking said, you need a router/gateway of some sort. If you have an old computer that you are not using (an old PIII works real well) you could run Smoothwall.

www.smoothwall.org

It's a free firewall/gateway that work really well and gives great network protection.

Let us know how it goes.

if u got nic and swith then now u should deploy star topology on ur network. after this u could apply ics for ur PCs or u may run workgroup network through static ip address.......

like addy999 said, connect BOTH the computers into the switch, or use the router again, try the factory reset button on the back. \

If you keep them both into the switch, I believe you will have to set both to DHCP but I'm not sure because I've never done a network topology like this

This setup will work for connecting computer to computer but WILL NOT allow internet access. You will need a router.
