Network?

I have never done this before but i just bought a laptop and a router(not wireless) on the laptop it has windows xp and on my desktop it has vista. I dont know much about doing this but when i hook up the cable to the laptop i get a message saying limited or no connectivity. But the internet on my desktop is fine. How would i get the internet to work on the laptop. My router did not come with any software. Please Help.
 
There are two ways of doing this:
First way is to enable DHCP on your router and the laptop will acquire an IP address when you plug the cable.
Second way is to look up the IP configuration on your desktop and manually configure your laptop to be in the same subnet and have the same gateway and DNS server.
 
which is easiest? im a noob lol.

where would i have to go to find all the info on my desktop.

where wouldi have to go on the laptop to change it to match the desktop

you should just be able to plug your router into your modem and then reset your modem (just unplug it for 10 sec) and then do the same for your router. then you should be able to plug your laptop into the router and your desktop into the router as well
 
If i remember correctly, on vista go to Network and sharing center then click on manage network connections you will find the LAN connection, right click on it and click properties. scroll down a bit and find Internet Protocol (version 4), double click on that and there should be some numbers written there.
On your XP laptop go to control panel - Network connections - Find the LAN connection, right click then properties, scroll down to Internet protocol, double click on it.

Enter the exact same numbers you found on your desktop except for the first one (IP)
just change the last digit in it
For example if on your desktop the IP is 192.168.1.1
it should be 192.168.1.2 or 3 or 4 ....etc to avoid IP conflict, two computers can't have the same IP on the same network.
