Networked Printer Issues

Hey All,

I just built a new PC and networked the printer (just like w/the old setup) but it doesn't seem to work.. I remember when I did it last time it took all of 1 minute to setup but this time the troubleshooting is going on days of my spare time. I'd really like to just get this working.

I've installed the printer, the laptop is showing it as 'Online' but when a doc is printed, nothing happens. I am at a loss. If anyone has any ideas I'd really appreciate it. I've already done the basic troubleshooting like re-installing the printers/drivers, restarting the printer/computers/network., double-checking the homegroup settings etc.

This is an HP C6480. Main computer has Windows 7 Pro x64 and the laptop has Windows 7 Home Premium x64.

Appreciate it.

Yep. New piece of info: When I try to print a doc from the laptop, my printer's LCD lights up (it comes off of standby) but never makes any physical movement. Also, I can print docs fine when I hardwire it to my desktop.

Is the printer attached to the desktop computer or is it hooked up to the router wired or wireless? If its attached to the desktop computer its possible that you have a firewall blocking the print job.

It's attached through my desktop. I just turned off Windows Firewall and it still wouldn't print. The printer lights up like it got some kind of incoming data but never prints. I also checked the firewall settings and it is set to allow printer sharing on both public and private networks.

I would try reinstalling the printer on the laptop and see what happens. Better yet... Is this printer wireless? You can always set this up through a wireless router and it doesn't have to be attached to the desktop pc.

check services

Have you tried checking the print spooler service in task manager, and make sure the service is listed as "started"??
Also, did you run the installation software before making physical connection?

Hmm so it works now. I ended up uninstalling the printer completely from my desktop, reinstalling it, going on the laptop and clicking 'Update Driver' for the device under 'Devices and Printers.' It downloaded what seemed to be a new driver from my desktop (The Mothership) and started working immediately.
