Networking 101

I went to one of cisco's office about a month ago and I was impressed to see all the different servers and products they use to connect businesses. Now I'm starting a networking class CISCO II next semester. Problem is I didn't take CISCO I. Where can I get information about basic networking? Is there a 101 Thread for this?

It really depends what sort of information level you are looking for. I'm not familiar with Cisco's grading. There are so many guides in the Internet. Here's one chosen at random based on googling your "network 101". If you already know the basics you can learn a lot from browsing equipment vendor's specs. Terminology that you don't understand, Google. My main gripe is they don't have enough pictures and diagrams! Microsoft has a number of guides. Browse the communication threads in this forum.
 
Thanks for the link there's lot of good reading most of it is pretty basic. Where can I find the communication thread? (Link?)
 
Cisco 1 is a lot of terminology. Cisco 2 is more orientated with actually setting up a router. Learning routing protocols like RIPv1 and v2, OSPF, EIGPR etc.. As well as basic router configurations. I would know. I'm taking Cisco 3 right now.

Cisco 1 you basically learn Subnetting, the OSI model, and some command line I think (been a couple years since I was in it). Honestly I think you'll be fine taking Cisco 2 as most of what you learn isn't majorly based off of Cisco 1, except for subnetting. Cisco 2 and Cisco 3 are intertwined though.

The first 12 chapters of Cisco 1 covers what you would learn from the CompTIA Network+ course so it'd be a review if you took the Network+ course. I'm not sure about Cisco 2. I'm currently taking Networking at my local Votech Center and We're on Chapter 14 of Network+ in the book. First 5 chapters are a must in knowing (CompTIA Network+ book)

Ch 1: Physical and Logical Topologies
Ch 2: OSI/RM
Ch 3: Cables
Ch 4: Ethernet Standards
Ch 5: Network Devices
 
I have not taken Network +. I have very little networking knowledge other connecting to my home network.
 
Best advice I can give is to try and get a book or some kind of online tutorial or possibly class on Cisco 1.

I'm in the computer program at school and started a year behind everyone so they put me in Cisco II.
 
That still doesn't make sense.. You don't start a year behind everyone. When you start a program, you start at the beginning regardless of where everyone else is.

Exactly, there are always new students starting every year. There is no way you can learn everything you missed from a year of classes this quickly.

At first I was told I was taking Cisco II but I am now aware I am taking Cisco I.
