Networking Desktop and Laptop

Hey CF,
I have connected my laptop and my desktop using a LAN cable. my laptop says that it has connected to an unidentified network but my desktop says that it has limited or no connectivity. I have turned on file and printer sharing on my desktop . i have shared my songs folder on my desktop but i cannot access it on my laptop.

how do i access it from the laptop and how do i establish full connectivity?

do you mean you connected the 2 machines directly?
did you use a crossover cable?
or did you put a router/hub in the middle

you need to set the IP address on the 2 machines manually
so set one to be ip
IP: 192.168.0.1
subnet: 255.255.255.0

and set the other to
IP: 192.168.0.2
subnet: 255.255.255.0

that should be enough to connect the 2, you can access the shared drives on machine 2 by typeing //192.168.0.2 into explorer

go to start -->run--> "\\ IP of laptop " or "\\10.30.10.10" or whichever Ip you assigned the machines

thanks again, is thr any way to share the internet connection? i want to browse from my laptop as well as my desktop when the internet is available on the desktop.

i also tried typing the ip in run but it says

"Windows cannot access \\192.168.0.1 Check the spelling of the name. Otherwise, there might be a problem with your network." I clicked diagonise and it said that the host did not respond after Ping.

can anyone help me?

the computers are configured to the same workgroup, the ips are set and the computers are linked using crossover cables.

strange, note that you need to put same Ip and same subnet, but DO NOT put gateway or DNS.
did you try pinging the laptop/desktop to see if there were replies, if not there's something you did wrong.
check your configurations again

it just says that my laptop is linked to an unidentified network. but when i type netstat into cmd, there are no active connections, and i have mentioned in my previous posts that there were no replies for the ping
