Networking Issues

I am not totally new to computers but I have been out of the loop for a while. I just re-installed my OS, Vista Ultimate 64 Bit, and when I try and change my network workgroup I get this message. It also does it when I installed Windows 7 Home Premium 64 Bit.

"You were not connected because a duplicate name exists on the network".

I have changed the name several times and even made up some really oddball names but nothing works. Although there are sometimes several computers on this network, all are shut off as I do this.
Any help is appreciated.

It doesn't sound like you are changing the workgroup, sounds like you are changing the actual name of the computer. You can't have 2 systems with the computer name.

I am only changing the name because the message says I have to. I really only want to join the network group but it says I can't. It won't let me join the network group no matter what Computer Name I type in, even though there's absolutly NO other computers connected to the network as the time.
