Networking Users

Im wondering if it is possible to set up a way for me (the admin) to maintain and watch over other computers over a network. And also is it possible to use the same set of login names for a group of computers. (for example like a school would do where you can type in your username and PW and access your files)

well what your school does is use active dirrectory. which only windows server can havem which costs about 1k. so if you really want it you need a version of windows server and setup active directory. else you can just set up user accounts on the wondows from the controle pannel

To have the same user accounts on every computer and share documents and/or have a roaming profile, I believe you would need to setup a domain, which requires a server OS such as Windows Server 2003. You would then setup active directory for all the accounts, set permissions, setup the profiles and document locations and such. You also can NOT use XP Home or Vista Home, as they don't support joining domains.

@Brian, not all Windows Server 2003 OS's cost around $1000, you can buy the standard version for a few hundred. Also active directory is not only for Windows Server, they have version for Mac as well as Linux/Unix.

o... well shows my knolage on server. i stick with linux  just now i am geting use to server as my school's tech guy is "traning" me so to say... showing me the buisness side to life which i really like since he is allowning me so much freedom.

hehe, I wish I got that kind of training in high school. I was one of those kids that always tried to find a way to bypass the schools security :P. Now the ironic part is that I'm interning at the same school district, although now I'm working to prevent students from bypassing the security.

I took a Windows Server 2003 class last semester and it had to of been one of the most interesting computer courses I've taken so far.

ha that is funny i am exactly like that... i use to find every little hack in my jr. high (i could change the admin password :P) and now, lets see. firewall blocks everything i want it to, computers locked down, they cant really do anything. but its ashame. everything is so miss treated. we just got really nice good lexmark laser printers and jsut had to return it b/c some kid broke a switch off it. gum was attached to it gum inside it, computer moniters smached togeter, computers off there racks, mice missing, screens jacked up. its horable!!! i saw someone eating a gressey pizza on a keyboard!!!!!!!!! you dont want to know how many times our princaple tells everyone that they cant go on it at lunch. we even closed the accounts at lunch but people leave the account active and just go on... next year.... that is a no no. log off after 5-10 min idel time

if they dont follow the rules. let the rules follow them. :D (that should be evil smilly with horns)

Well your not the only one - I'm always trying to bypass school security trying to do things!!!! I want to get hotmail at school and the techs have blocked and i have posted a forum about it and one guy suggested i go and speak to admin and get them to unblock it for me.... but i can tell right now they won't!!!

I'm learning heaps about the computer and i one of the computer techs in my class that know what they are doing.

I know the tech department will not. There are several ways to get around the blocking, some of which I have learned after learning how our schools security is setup, what they use for blocking, and how their network is configured. However I would never tell any of the students there what to do to bypass it, as that could get me into some serious trouble.
