Networking with printer?

Hey guys,
We have a wireless router in our home, for internet; and it happens that our printer (which is set up via USB to a laptop) is in the same room as the router. Is it possible to plug the USB printer cable into the USB port on the router and set it up so that all computers connected to our wireless connection can print off this one printer? Or can I do something else similar? Perhaps this is the option they call "Network Installation" when you install the printer normally?

Anyway, this is probably old hat to some of you guys, but I'd appreciate the help. Thanks in advance.

Davis

You can connect the printer to one of the computer and share it, but that computer has to stay on all the time for others to print . you don't install the printer on the computer connected to as network printer, however the others will have to install as networked printer.
Good luck

John, the router is a D-Link DIR-655 XTREME N Gigabit Router. Perhaps the USB port on it is only for attaching a flash-drive for setting up the settings?

paulcheung, if I understand you right, the computer to which the printer is connected would act sort of like a server, is that correct?

Thanks guys.

Yes, the usb port on the router will allow you to share printers and other usb devices on your network. Read the manual on how to set it up.

What if the printer is wireless? Oem or adapter or bt? With or w/o router, could it be configured for other pc's be able to use it with only the printer turned on?
Hi davis, for sake of a new thread, this seems to apply.

Yes the computer will act like a printer server. If you can't get the router to work with the printer you try this.
Good luck.
