I just installed a 250GB hard drive as the slave drive on my computer, but in the bios and in My Computer it shows to only have about 40GB of space. Can anyone help me with this?

My computer is a dell dimension 4600 with Intel P4 processor. I'm runnin windows XP home edition. The new 250gb hard drive is a Hitachi, not sure bout the old one.

Check the jumper to see if it is in the proper position (master/slave) it might be set to limit the drive to 32GB

The drive should have a label on it telling you the various jumper settings (the jumper is on the back by the IDE & power connections) you'll want to make sure it is in the slave, master or cable select position

If it is going be your secondary drive (does not have your operating system on it, and you not going to be booting to it) than your jumper should be set to slave.

well the thing is, I am going to copy the old drive onto the 250GB drive and eventually get rid of the 40GB drive.... So do i need to make the 250 the slave in order to copy and then switch it back to cable select afterwards? Also, is it possible that the BIOS needs to be upgraded??? I appreciate everybody's help...

You can check for upgrades to your bios on the manufactures website, its usualy not critical to do so though. Your 250gig h/d should be a slave drive, unless you have an OS on it, than it could be master or slave, and the other drive the opposite.

Whichever drive has the OS that you want to boot into needs to be the master, and the other slave.
