im going to have about $1,000 to spend on a computer.... which right now will buy me a mobo and a processor.... im tired of building value computers for myself so im going to go all out and get an AMD Athlon FX-55 and this motherboard i have the RAM and the PSU... ill need a pci-e video card and a case, but im sure that ill go for an FX-57 in 4 months cause the price will drop.. and im sure ill have more then 1k to spend by then too.. but maybe the motherboard can change... im fairly fond of tigerdirect and newegg, but i prefer to spend money on one shipping bill if you know what i mean.. but i guess what im asking is; should i go all out and peice it together for about 2k or build another 1k simi value system?
 
That can depend on what you want to use if for. If you want a mid-range - high-end computer then go for spending the $2000, but if you're not into games much and if it doesn't really bother you, just spend about $1000 and when you get bored of it, spend another $1000 on an even better pc when the prices drop.
 
like get a 939 board but just get a cheap A64 insted of the FX, and just spend $800-$900 for the FX upgrade later?
 
i would go all out. Wait a little longer until u have more money and maybe some newer parts have come out so u can put the top of the line in ur comp. but yea if u can buy everything from newegg. i had a terrible shipping problem with tigerdirect.
 
you might also want to try ZipZoomFly for prices before you get it at newegg. They have free 2-day shipping and sometimes better prices. I got my X800PRO for $199 instead of the $269 newegg had it for.
 
I'm sorry but I fail to see why you would want to spend a small fortune on such a cpu for your tasks, don't buy the latest.
 
because, as soon as i get my system up to 4gb of ram, two of the latest video cards, a cheaper alternative processor, and about 500gb of storage, i can be set on a computer for a loooong time.... think about this, two 7800s, 4gb of ddr400, A64 4000+, and 500gb of space.... ill be set on gaming for the next 5-8 years, then i can upgrade

You do know that 4GB of ram isn't optimal for a gaming machine.

5-8 years? Good luck..

Want gaming performance, buy a Pentium M and oc it to 2.2 or 2.3Ghz. :)

i would go all out, get the 2k system and enjoy it while it lasts, as for 5-8years, i would like to see that, but definately 4-5 years.
 
weeellll... i dont have 2k yet.... so ill get the 1k system, then only have like 1.2k left, that would be for the fx and for the better videocard... so ilol get something that can hold me over for a few months till i can upgrade
 
$1000 isn't much for a gaming pc. Even $2000 isn't enough.

If you want it to last 5 years, span your money over a few years. Buy a nice system now and upgrade as it gets slower on the new games. who cares if a 7800 GTX can get super high FPS. Your own eye can't keep up with such a high frame-rate so just go with a card that will keep it from not slowing down and upgrade as time goes by. I bet in a year there will be a card much better than the 7800GTX and at a lower price. Heck, the 7800GTX will be just another mid-high end card in a year or two. Think about it, spend $200 on a card now that can hold you over for at least 2 years (6600GT-$175? or X800PRO $199) and in two years another $200 card will be twice as fast as the then out-dated 7800GTX. Moore's Law is still in effect and will probably be for a while now.
 
but i want to just get the best i can for now, $1,000 means holding back on a killer hdd, and killer memory, but thoes are what im upgrading later in life.... a 4000+ with 1024mb dual channel ddr400, and a 7800gtx should be sufficiant for the next 6-7 months for gaming stuff like generals and diablo 2

if all you play is generals and diablo 2 my geforce 2 mx 400 will do.
