New AMD 550BE at 79 degrees celcius

hi,
so i just built my new computer, and for some reason my AMD phenom II 550BE is running at 79 degrees!!
i don't know whats going on!! cpu usage is at 5% and still 79 degrees.
i am using speedfan and sensor view pro 3.2 or something like that.
i was trying to use everest but that wouldn't work, no matter how long i left it.

speedfan says my fan1 speed is at 8000RPM (i assume thats cpu fan) and sensor view says my fan speed is 100 RPM
wtf??

i went into bios and changed cpu fan speed to 100% all the time but still no drop in temp!
and now there is this annoying high pitch sound it sounds like a motor going real hard (as in like 1billion RPM hard) and so i switched the fan speed back to auto and it still makes that noise!!
(i also changed the ram clock to 1600 because for some reason my mobo only had it at 1066 and my ram is supposed to run at 1600, I tried changing it back to stop the noise... but nope didn't work!)

any help would be appreciated thanks!

***edit***
i just checked to make sure the cpu fan is clipped in properly and it is. whats going on??

What does the bios say the temp is? Try downloading AMD Overdrive and check the temps there as well.. sure it is not farenheit?

more than likely the program your using is wrong.. and you have a bad fan ...

Do what Jasonn20 said. Go into your BIOS and check your processor temperature there. You may be getting an inaccurate reading.

the noise... It could be the junk heatsink that comes with the 550. Unplug it for a sec or two and see if it stops.

sweet thanks i will give that a shot!
thanks a lot for your help so far!
and you were right, the programs were giving inaccurate temp readings... phew

thanks!

Are we talking 79 degrees celsius here? Make sure it's not giving to fahrentheit readings first I guess.

Secondly, even if the CPU fan was not going at all, if your chip is at stock speeds it wouldn't go over 50c.

Unplugging the CPU fan while it's runnning will cause automatic shutdown!

You may simply have a bad chip, it happens.

I recommend using gigabyte's own utility for monitoring temps, Easy tune. Here's the link for the download, if you are running windows 7 you may have to run in compatability mode for vista-

nah.. it wil not shut down by disconnecting the fan it will shutdown by the temp.. on my gigabyte board it does anyway..

Ahh, well I don't remember what board I was running at the time but I disconnected the cpu fan and it shut down right away. There was no way the temps go that high that quick.

i did what jasonn20 said and downloaded AMD overdrive and it turns out that speed fan and the other program was cmopletely wrong, the temps are fine.

but now i just have this annoying high pitched buzzing oise coming from my computer, can't tell exactly where its coming from.

it started when i clocked my ram up to its normal speed of 1600Mhz (my mobo automaticly had it at 1066) i have tried changing the ram back to 1066Mhz to try to get the noise to stop, but it won't and it is really annoying, its fairly loud.

so sorry but i need your help again lol :o

**edit**
and nope i haven't tried unlocking the fourth core yet.

thanks so much for your help!

thats a good idea, i will try unplugging each fan as i go along aswell
was wondering, could it be my PSU fan?

ok well i took the side panel off and unplugged all of my case fans.
it appears to be either the GPU, HDD or the motherboard making the high pitched buzzing noise.

so i'm not sure what to do next, it is rather irritating and i have to play some loud music to cover up the noise.

thank you for your help so far, but i could still use some of your genius minds! :P

Do you have on-board memory or another GPU you can use? If so, pop that in or use it so we can rule out or confirm it's the GPU. Also, is it a constant noise? Like, always sounding or is it erratic and starts randomly?

i don't have any onboard graphics or another GPU to use unfortunately.
The noise starts when the signal is sent to the montior to turn it on, then it stays on constantly without pause or hesitation.
could i just remove the gpu and then turn it on and leave it for a while then turn it off?
or would that cause some harm?

cheers

I would not use AMD Overdrive for overlocking it tends to be inaccurate as far as that goes. It is nice for monitering temps while your running a stability test though. I prefer using the bios for overclocking but the Gigabyte utility mentioned earlier tends to be pretty good. FYI
