New Asus laptop won't sit idle

I've got a new Asus N73SV and for some reason it won't sit idle. Every time I close it and go do something for any length of time (while still running) I come back and it's off. Not only has it shut down though, it shut down hard because I'm always greeted with the "Windows did not shut down properly" screen during boot. I have it set to not do anything when I close the lid (and it doesn't) it usually takes like 10-15 min before it shuts down. I checked all the power settings and all of them say "Do Nothing" when it's plugged in so I'm not sure why it keeps shutting down or why it's doing so in an improper way...suggestions? (Running Win 7 Ultimate x64 btw)

Check your power manager see when you are having the system sleep and turn it all off, see how it acts then.
 
Is it plugged in or on battery when you leave it??

It could also be an overheating issue or a BSOD,issue.
 
Yes it's plugged in....

Shouldn't have any applications that are shutting it down. It's not even a month old yet so it doesn't have much of anything installed on it right now.
 
Have you gone to the ASUS support web site, and checked for any updates?
I have done this with my ASUS's laptops, and have updated items with new update dates.
 
I would try almost closing (so the switch is not activated). If it behaves the same it could be an unusual heat issue. Alternatively get a CPU temperature monitoring utility running and check the temps before closing and after 10 minutes of being closed.

Are you getting any system error messages logged when you reboot?
 
Have any recommendations for a good temp monitoring program? I'm using coretemp currently but I wouldn't mind using something with some more features, like the ability to log temps so I can see them later. Core temp seems to only display the current temp and nothing else.
 
Well I may have just solved it...When this has been happening it's when I've been closing the laptop and setting it on it's side leaning against my end table. So it's basically sitting vertical on it's left side. Well I just looked at the left side and the exhaust vent is on that side...so I think I was blocking the exhaust so no air was moving through...oops. Guess I'll either have to set it so it's resting on it's front edge or just lay it horizontal like a normal person...


Coretemp says my CPU temp is sitting at 60*C right now...is that high for a laptop? My desktop stays at like 30*C.
 
If the laptop comes with Asus Probe II you could try that. The original Probe has a history tab which records when you want it to and saves it later. There are a number of other monitoring utilities such as Speedfan, Hmonitor, Motherboard Monitor.
 
Yeah I think something is wrong with coretemp. I thought my temps used to be lower and when I downloaded RealTemp, it's showing them all around 40*C. I believe coretemp is stuck in the mode where it shows the "Delta to tjunction max" temp.

Also yes it's an i7-2630QM

EDIT: Yeah nevermind, something was just screwy with coretemp, I reinstalled it and it's working fine now, temp sits around 42*C at idle. I'll report back if I get anymore unexplained shutdowns but I think it was because I was blocking the exhaust vent...lol
