FYI, hope this helps anyone with NFSS problems. It was a major PITA for me.
Need For Speed Shift problem
Need For Speed Shift issue
Need For Speed Shift patch
Need For Speed Shift 10.2 10.1 issue
I noticed all of these issues on the 5870
ATI 10.2 drivers (and 10.1) make the screen stutter significantly in NFSS, when I back the drivers to 9.11 or 9.12 the problem goes away. Fraps shows 60FPS but you get very bad stutter all of the time on any track.
EA 1.02 patch makes the car stutter really bad when you contact anything, like a wall or other car. I installed this patch to fix the first issue above (ATI 10.2) and it did for the most part. I called EA who told me it was an i7-920/ game program issue and had me disable 6 of the 8 threads. It did nearly resolve the issue but I also lost significant performance, it would play about like my 5770. I have v-sync set to 60 and the game now plays at nearly 40 pfs, 60 was no problem before. With out v-sync you are well over 100, so 40 and less is bad.
EA tech support said the game will play fine on the i5, so I tried it, same issues with both drivers. Revert drivers and game to pre-patch and all of the problems go away. Nothing to do with i7-920.
Nothing is overclocked.
Note-I also have a 5870 besides my cards below in case you are wondering how I noticed these issue. You don’t even want to know about my 5970 NFSS issues. The 5870 seems to be the best card between the two for this game at the moment.
