Approximate Purchase Date: Assembly should be completed by Mid August

Budget Range: £600

System Usage from Most to Least Important: Numerical and computational analysis, engineering software (CAD, FEA, etc), Work, Gaming, expected to be running most of the time.

Are you buying a monitor: No, using my current monitors and hd tv via hdmi connection.

Do you need to buy OS: Yes, Windows 7 64 bit

Preferred Website(s) for Parts: ebuyer/dabs (UK based)

Location: UK

Parts Preferences: None

Overclocking: Not initially, but maybe in the future

SLI or Crossfire: Maybe

Additional Comments: It is really important that the system can manage numerical computations, efficiently. Currently for example I have an 8 GB RAM PC and there is not enough memory to run some analysis. For my analysis, I can select the number of CPU cores and amount of RAM to allocate, the more CPU cores/speed and the more RAM, the faster the analysis gets done.

I have two builds, one if based on the i5 processor and the other is based on the amd fx processor. Still not sure which way to go?

I have detailed the specs in a spreadsheet https://dl.dropbox.com/u/47274064/P [...] latest.xls

I have also listed the builds below:

AMD BUILD
Corsair Memory 600W Builder Series CX V2 ATX PSU
Antec 300 Three Hundred Case
AsRock 970 Extreme3 Motherboard
AMD Bulldozer 3.1 Ghz 8 Core
Coolermaster Hyper 212 EVO CPU Cooler
Kingston 16GB DDR3 1600MHz XMP HyperX Memory
LG DVD R
Sapphire HD 7750 1GB GDDR5 DVI HDMI DisplayPort PCI-E Graphics Card
Western Digital 500GB Caviar Blue 7200RPM 16MB SATA 6Gb/s
Crucial CT064M4SSD2 64GB M4 SSD
Total Cost: £595

INTEL BUILD
Corsair Memory 600W Builder Series CX V2 ATX PSU
Antec 300 Three Hundred Case
Asus P8H77-V S1155 Intel Z77 DDR3 ATX
Intel Core i5-3570K S1155 3.4GHz 6MB
Kingston 16GB DDR3 1600MHz XMP HyperX Memory
LG DVD R
Sapphire HD 7750 1GB GDDR5 DVI HDMI DisplayPort PCI-E Graphics Card
Western Digital 500GB Caviar Blue 7200RPM 16MB SATA 6Gb/s
Crucial CT064M4SSD2 64GB M4 SSD
Total Cost: £631

I would really appreciate your
1) feedback and suggestions
2) Which one would you go for, based on my requirements
3) Any changes you would make
4) Thoughts on the cost

Thanks, I am learning lots and getting more experience before finalising my build.

Antec 300 is not a good case for cable management. Look at something else in the same price range. Case is mostly personal preference on looks but some are better than others for the price due to cable management and quality of parts.

Intel build would be better for lots of heavy computing. Sure the FX has 8 cores but honestly they're not nearly as good at heavy CPU use as an Intel.

If you spent maybe 10-20 more on a hard drive you could move up to a terabyte.

Your link doesn't work.

True the 300 doesn't have cable management, but it does have good air flow. If you use it you can use peel and stick zip tie mounts or something similar to route the already sleeved cables away from flow.

Since in your other thread you mentioned the system possibly running for days to complete program tasks, and the 3570 not having hyperthreading, lends me to believe that the x8 would be better. AMD cash for cores

You could upgrade the AMD mb to the better overclocker/cooler running Gigabyte 970 suggested in your other thread,,and,,don't know off hand but I'm pretty sure you can save a bit with Gskill, Corsair, Patriot..on the memory.

@warunasanjaya88 he is on a 600 pound budget. There is no way he will be able to afford a 560ti-448.

The 7750 is a little weak if memory holds though. Might be better to go for a 6870.

Western Digital is far superior to seagate. Why would you ever in any reality go away from them?

DVD drive brand does not matter. They all are about the same quality. I have never had an issue with LG drives and both my Laptops DVD drives are sourced from LG and they work just fine.

Quadro is recommended/best compatible for CAD, is it not? Since CAD and game on the same pc there might be an Nvidia card that is proven to work well with CAD?

All nvidia cards kill any AMD card when it comes to CAD IIRC because of the CUDA cores and the drivers, they make it easier for the progrm to use and the programs are generally designed for nvidia i think.

Thats why I mentioned nVidia, to see if someone had an nVidia recommend to use in place of what Quadro is designed for.

Ah, missed that. He will want firepro or Quadro then, but even a GTX550ti will out do any AMD for that. Personally, I don't have any issue with CAD modeling with a 480 or a FX2500m either.
