New Build, Constant LockUps (XP,8600gt,P4m900-m4)

Guys I need help, I built this PC and it’s driving me crazy, it’s my first time to

Symptoms: LOCKUPS (When the EVGA 8600gt is installed)

• It will lock the computer up in the first 5-10 mins(mouse dont move)
• Longest duration: about 30 mins (lock up caused when I viewed a streaming video off of streetfire.net)

So after figure I had it nailed on the head it’s the video card. So I pulled it out, then booted the computer…I was like nice it seems to be working fine…then get this it LOCKED UP
I freaked out, cause now I had didn’t know if it was the idea GPU or not…

Ok so now I m thought it was something other then the video card right, so I reboot now its rock solid for about 5 hours+ now.
I’ve thrown everything at it, PCMARK05 all kinds a programs to really run it hard to attempt to duplicate a lockup…

So what do you guys think? What is the main component in Lockups in XP

Is it just the new video card? Plenty of reviews at Newegg.com said the 8600gt worked on this board so I don’t think it’s that. I’ve used 2 sets of drivers EVGA and NVIDIA’s.

UPDATE: Ok the PC ran for about 12 hours LOCKUP free so i fig i had it nailed on the head so i went to load a video game to use it to stress the PC and during the install it Locked up...so safe to say its isnt the GPU..

so what is it? RAM,Mobo,CPU?

Please help!

UPDATE: I replaced the P4 with an extra Celeron D 345 and the computer seems to run PERFECT!

CHANGES: I put in the the celly D and ran it for an hour seemed fine no lockups---so i popped in the 8600gt to see if it would work too etc.

RESULTS: at the moment its been running perfect, i ran Guild wars on HIGH settings and was getting 35-75 fps for a hour straight.

Although it may be to soon to say, did i figure it out?
Is it possible for a CPU to cause the Lockups???

It could be/have been any of your hardware. Computers are mysterious a lot of the time.

I hear ya, should i put the Pentium 4 back in? Maybe it will work now?

or is it safe to say just i should buy a new chip???

After having the system run for about 2 days with the Celeron D with no lockups i decided to determine if the P4 truly was the problem.
I put it in and after about 10 mins it locked up the pc agian, upon reboot i disabled the Hyperthreading feature to ensure it wasnt an issue with that, it appeared to last a little bit longer but resulted in the same lockup as before...

This is for anyone who happen to be following this thread or searches in the future for help!

99% positive cpu failure of some sort...

Sorry to bring back a thread from the dead but the issue continues....

I took the advice and purchased another P4 chip to throw in the system...and guess what?

The system just randomly locks up with the new chip too. (im so lost atm)

So can anyone explain why the PC works perfectly fine with my Celeron D but will not work with 2 P4 3.0 ghz chips???????

The confusion continues, i decided to boot it back up today to see what the deal was and so far its run fine for about 1 hour. I even ran PCmark05 to try to "stress" it out. It ran through it like a dream with a score of 3,755.

just fig i d keep ppl posted if they were reading along ha

You have updated to the latest chipset drivers for your board and was using the latest video drivers for your onboard or card which ever one you used?

Yes i have the most updated drivers. That being siad this is a post of good news...

turns out after frustion upon the reboot today i was like "F-it" im overclocking this punk ha

once i did that it hasnt had any issues...go figure?

is it possible that the motherboard would not run the chip because it was too slow???

It makes sense to me, the Celeron D was tech. rated at 3.06 ghz and since i booted the pc overclocked over the 3 ghz mark (3.21) its run flawlessly.

to me this makes no sense logically, i will attempt to verify this conclusion by putting the original chip in that i had thought was faulty and run it over 3ghz to and see if any issues arise.

Thank you for everyones input!
