My budget is about $1000. Is it worth it to spend more than $1000 on a pc? I'm looking for the best bang for the buck. I probably won't be upgrading my computer for a long time. I will be using this computer to play game mostly, watching videos and using photoshop. The games I'm looking forward to play is L4D2, SC2, Diablo 3, Massive Effect.

GPU
I couldn't decide if I should go with a 5850 right now or grab a cheap GPU and wait for the price of 5850 to drop. My current Monitor is only 17inches, 1280x1024 resolution. I'm was thinking of getting an Asus 21 or 24 inches monitor with the 5850. Or suggests a better alternative if you could. :D

Case
I don't know if I should go for an Antec Three Hundred or Antec Nine Hundred.

Dvd Drive
I don't know which dvd drive I should get.

None, if you want a nice, cheap, full tower case with amazing air-flow, you might want to invest in the HAF 932. Are you going to be burning discs or just reading them?

***EDIT***
Unless, of course, that pushes it over budget.

Looks like a solid build to me. Your graphics card situation sounds like it's mostly up to your patience. As for a monitor, I got an Asus 21.5" monitor 1920x1080 with hdmi in and built in speakers. It's got a very nice picture and is very spatious. However, I got this particular one because I also play my 360 on it, so you might be able to get something a bit cheaper without it.

Gigabyte MoBo's FTW! Personally, I'd go with the 300 over the 9, but that's just me. You'll most-likely go back and forth looking at the pictures of each for at least another hour, switching towards what you like more every 10 minutes:P Both are nice, but if you want to save the money (or have a bit extra to play with on other parts the build) grab the 300.

get the HAF 922 case. it's a tweaked 932 and it weighs 10 pounds less, and is wider so you can fit more stuff in it.

Antec cases seem to get quite dusty, well mine seems to, if your a dab hand with a hoover then its ok

Thanks for the suggestion guys but I'm going to go with an Antec 300. :D Also, I changed the motherboard to a Micro ATX and decided to get the 4870 dark knight. I have one question though. Do I need to buy a sound card for sound? Many Thanks :good:

>>Do I need to buy a sound card for sound? Many Thanks

That MoBo has plenty of built-in sound power, but you can still buy a sound card if you have a higher-end speaker setup. What MoBo did you finally go with?

If you ever plane on going with Crossfire or SLI GPU's then go with an AMD or i7 build. The Socket 1156 motherboards only offer 8x,8x crossfire and SLI.This pretty much make crossfire or SLI with the i5 pointless. So if you have plains for future Crossfire or SLI then don't wast your money on the i5.

As for your build it looks pretty good. The only thing I would change is the graphics card to a 4890 or 5850. The 5850 isn't coming down in price any time soon so don't hold your breath for it. IMO Also don't get an Antec case everybody as an Antec mix it up. Go with the haf 922, Storm Scout, V9, CM RC-690, AZZA Helios, or anything from Lian Li.

Edit: Oh yea get some of this thermal past http://www.computerforum.com/158336-shin-etsu-x23-7783d.html it's the past on the market.

Not really, even with high end cards its not but a few FPS. With mid range card there is no difference at all.

Actually the 5850/5870 as well as the upcoming GT300 series will suffer degraded performance with only 16pcie lanes hardwired to the cpu.

A great case for the price is the coolermaster 690, and id go with the asus monitor over the acer;)

What memory are you going to be using?

If your dead set on 1156, id definately spend the extra $10 on this mobo:

I took the motherboard and case that bomberboysk suggested. Now, my total is 901.49 after rebate. :D I found the coolmaster case and HDD combo to be pretty sweet with $45 off. The motherboard looks to be larger than the one I picked too.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.273732

As for the CPU, I don't think I will be needing a i7. To be honest, I don't even think I will be using all 4 cores in the i5. Furthermore, I never use SLI or Crossfire before and I think a single gpu would satisfy with my current need. I also considered going for Phenom II x3 as an alternative. Unless someone could convince me, I will be sticking with the i5.

As for the GPU situation, my mind was being torn apart. The price of the 5850 seems too expensive for me. And I know the price of the card will drop down eventually in the future. But if I spend the money on another GPU, I will probably be paying the same cost. 5850's cost now = old gpu + 5850 in the future. I don't really want to be an early adopter. Also, the nivida's GT300 haven't come out yet. It might or might not beat the 5850 in performance/price.

Right now the 5850 is killer in price->performance, GT300 is going to be costly and only the high end units will come out at launch. The 5770 is also a great card for the price if you dont want to spend so much towards a 5850.

Ati cards dont drop in price anywhere nearly as much as nvidia cards, the price of the 4890 since launch and til now hasnt been an overwhelmingly massive drop. Plus nvidia units always tend to be pretty overpriced at launch.

He was saying it was pointless or a waste of money. If your running a 4890 or below its not going to make but a few % FPS. That is if they are both PCIe 2.0 slots. Not talking about 5850/5870, he was getting a 4870.

Well even then, future cards will need the bandwidth, and 1156 isnt upgradeable to i9(even though 90% of people running 1366 will ever need or buy i9 anyhow).
