new build dilema

ok so Im building a new gaming PC. I have a strict budget but have come up with something I think is good. My dilema is that I would really like to stick a GTX 980 in my new build but at the moment only a GTX 970 will fit. I have come up with a solution that I could use a slightly weaker CPU and MB combination in order to fit the better graphics card. Is it worth spending the extra cash on the better GPU? I only game at 1920x1080 and have no intention of getting a 4k monitor any time soon, so at that resolution is it worth lowering cpu quality for better gpu?

What CPUs were you considering?

In all honesty you could put the 980 into your existing system and be OK.

i was tossing up between the i5 4690k and the i5 4460 as the cheaper option
then the gigabyte h97 gaming 3 as a cheaper option over the Asus Sabertooth z97 mark 2

I could just upgrade my system with the new gpu but I like to build a whole new system every 2 or 3 years and pass my old hardware over to someone that does not have a pc or has an old one

Suit yourself, although debating between 4690k and 4460 as a cost savings measure means you don't have that great of a budget for a new build anyway.

The 980 would give you a lot more performance than a Haswell i5 and a 970, for less money.

Why do I think a 980 will be overkill for 1080p gaming? Plus you can overclock 970s to 980 reference specs pretty easily anyway, there's a £200 difference in the cards in the UK, personally at 1080 I'd stick with a 970.

cheers smilie. I think I will stick with the 970 as you suggest. There is a $200aud difference between that and the 980 plus I can get the Asus STRIX which will overclock really well for only $500
