New Build - First time builder - Compatibility questions

Hey I also posted this on toms hardware, but I need all the advice I can get, so here goes:

I'm totally new to building a computer so thanks in advance for all the help.

The purpose of this computer is to play games (Starcraft II) and work with some light computational work (MATLAB, STATA, VBA, college stuff).

I'm most worried about the Case and if it's compatible with the stuff I've got. But I'm sure I'm missing something. I've already picked out a monitor, a keyboard, and a mouse. I'm not sure if I'll need to have a DVD drive yet, but if that's super necessary than I'll grab one. I'm not super well off, and I've been saving up in college for something that'll be good. In other words, I'm sort of price inflexible, but we have some wiggle room.

As long as the case is ATX you'll have no problems. You will need a DVD drive to install an operating system.

you may want to get a better motherboard with a newer chipset (800 series) for example my board has an 880G chipset.

The 965 is a great processor. If you're doing intensive stuff it may be worth getting a 6-core processor.

Well for one thing the motherboard is DDR2 and you have DDR3 memory. Change the board to a AM3 DDR3 board.

Save some bucks and get the 955, most will clock just as well as the 965.

get a 500gb seagate 7200.12 (fastest single platter hd), wd black is only good if you get 1tb or more, plus seagate 7200.12 500gb is a better value, and the update/firmware is good. and get a 955 with a better cooler (best value HEATSINK is zalman performa for $30 it got 5 copper heatpipes after you replace the fan for like $5 it kills its competitors)
