New build for music recording/editing?

So not in the too distant future I'd LOVE to build my first machine, and other than Internet , word processing and the such I would like to use it some for music recording & editing? I play guitar a little and sing a little and would like to be able to put some of my stuff on a CD.........maybe a little Video as well, so what sort of specs would my machine need in order to do this without ANY problems at all?

Thanks for the help!

A decent processor and a good Sound card, avoid CreativeLab SB cards - I believe they're geared more towards gaming, check out EMU or Xonar. Intel would probably be overall better. Perhaps a Q9000 quad or QX, the ever expensive i7 is always a great choice. Anyone else have comments?

What's the budget for this build?

I don't think you'll need anything special really except maybe a good soundcard.

Surely there's someone else here who would know about this sort of build....... come on guys!

I do know about that kind of build (I've built 2 music rigs), that's why I recommended the Presonus Inspire interface, it's better for recording guitar and vocals than just a sound card.

You probably don't need a terribly great computer to do that stuff especially if its only going to be a short term thing. A nicer computer will only help but you should decide that if its worth spending more for something that you may get tired of doing after a few months and decide not to do anymore. My dad did some music related stuff on his computer and his system wasnt that great and he didnt complain.

Hey guys, thanks for taking the time to post responses,,,,,,, about how long I plan on using the machine for music recording and editing,, I really have no way of knowing ,,, as far as budget, the cheaper the better as long as it'll do what I need..............

Irish Whistle had some good advice, To be honest though if you want some good quality music recording software your best bet and choice would be to go MAC.

They make a few programs for windows for music recording, some programs that work with Windows and OSX.

Ive used them before on Windows and Mac, for some reason its just a better experience on a Mac.

With Windows, i've recorded some stuff on guitar before and there are a lot of settings on your Operating system(windows) that you have to tinker with before you can use the recording software.

with Mac, your just good to go. Im a PC person but Mac is just the way to go for Music/Video.

If you do decide to go Windows you should be fine with what Irish Whistle posted. You'll be able to do your recording too, just not as easy as it is on a mac.

No one sells Mac OS's right? The only way to get the OS is to buy the machine from Apple, right? Well, I want to build the machine myself if possible.............

Probably because it was written by Apple? lol

Anyone can buy Mac OS X but it's illegal to install it on anything other than a Mac.

As sugested you don´t need a powerful rig for the work you want to do. A Dual core will be ample, IE: X2 7750. That way you can throw all your money at the sound card and speakers.

Unless your just playing like punk thrash. :D

SO like I was thinking IF I'm going to "build" a machine for myself then I'll HAVE to use Windows of some sort or another,, I would guess XP home OR XP Pro?

LOL, no, I wouldn't be doing anything like that. :D

Anyways, I'm thinking I'll need a fairly large hard drive, and s much memory as I can afford and/or that the machine will hold and recognize as well as a really good sound card, and a dependable power supply, but what wattage?,, and since I plan on doing a little video editing and burning to DVD then I'll also want a good video card................... ideas? Options?

You can never have enough space , especially where video is concernd . Have a look at the Samsung F1 spinpoint 1 terra.
It´s fast, quiet,cool and cheap.

Not really, more than 4gig is a waste in most cases.

That power supply will be sufficient.

Video editing is CPU intensive, An ATI 4670 would suit you just fine.
