New build for my son

Hey fellas, well I want to give my son a new pc for gaming

So if you guys can please help me out, pick out what I need.

He likes to play all those fancy games like COD and Mohh

He already has a monitor, keyboard/mouse, and speakers

Limit about 800$

^ Doesn't really make a difference as far as recommending parts, since a game can always drop the res if it's too high.

I'm assuming Windows is needed along with this?

Are you buying it for Christmas or thereabouts? (If you're buying it soon we can use combo deals)

I was just wondering If I should say GTX 460, HD 5770, etc.
 
I'd wait 'til Intel's new line of processors (sandy bridge) come out, only about a month from now. But if you wanted an $800 build today, then this is what I'd suggest:
i5-760 - $205
ASUS P7P55D-E LX - $120 after MIR
2 x 2GB DDR3 1600MHz - $60
Sapphire HD 6850 - $185
OCZ ModXStream Pro 500W - $40 after promo code OCZDEC12 and MIR
CM Hyper 212+ - $30
CM Elite 430 - $50
SATA DVD-RW - $20
SpinPoint F3 1TB - $70

Total before shipping - $780

The build above will be able to max out CoD and MOH at high resolutions. They aren't actually hugely demanding games.

EDIT: This case is pretty good too, is $10 cheaper and also there is free shipping. However, you may want to add extra case fans.

The Elite 430 is $60 shipped and has no cable management...maybe go for an HAF 912 instead?

edit: I wouldn't be running something expensive stuff like that on a modxstream...

Maybe switch out the PSU for a Seasonic S12II or M12II?

The GTX 460 he posted is great, but there is a bit of extra metal that hangs over the edge of the PCB. Also, You cannot SLI if your son would want to.
6850 or 5850 if he wants to Crossfire.

Maybe use a ATX board? ASUS M4A88T-V EVO/USB3

EDIT: You would get more value out of your purchase with an AMD Build.

^ I'm inclined to agree on the PSU...the Element line isn't Silverstone's best. The 650W one should stay within spec, but the 850W definitely didn't (even died before it hit full wattage), and they all have a habit of exploding when something goes wrong, rather than shutting down.

The mobo is worth the extra as well, for the (much) better CPU power section.

I'd recommend the top option, personally...Athlons benefit from fast RAM.

I would buy a case off this forum and buy the parts like motherboard, ram and such online.

I am getting evga p55 LE, 8GB DDR3 Mushkin 1333mhz RAM, and a Cougar 700w Modular PSU for about $250 brand new retail on newegg~~

combo the cougar PSU + Motherboard. Ram is 2 sets of 2X2GB

you could add a EVGA 460 GTX for about $140 after rebate. should run all COD and such no problem :D

Hate to say it but that's a bad choice. You really only need 4GB of 1600MHz CAS7/8, and Cougar is not a brand I've ever heard of...

Spend less on RAM and more on a decent PSU :good:

Anyways, with the money taken off the power supply he could fit in the extra cost on the motherboard.

Cougar is made by HEC, who is really trying to set that line up as a quality brand of PSU's...they actually re-tooled one unit based completely on a Hardware Secrets review. One of them even got a Jonnyguru recommendation, I believe. Not all of them are really good, but there are a few.

Same unit as the SX700 in the states, as far as I can tell.

Not a bad unit, but for the price, you can do much better.
