New Build HDD RAID ?

I will be building a new computer soon. Going with i7/1366. I will be using it mainly for gaming, internet, movies, and music. I am trying to figure out what my best HDD setup would be. Also, This is my first build. I was planning on buying 2 WD 640gb hdd and doing a raid array. I don't think 0 is the right option for me ,just because I am a more protection minded person. I already have a bare WD 500gb hdd unused.

Wondering what others do ,and what offers data protection without hindering performance? Would it be better to setup a raid 1 and use the 500gb hdd just to store movies and music?

Thanks in advance for any help with my questions.

I don't really like RAID arrays at home, but of you are looking for failure tolerance with 2 drives RAID1 is really your only option. An external drive for backups is a good answer too, as long as you schedule backups at regular intervals.

I have a external drive I don't have it pluged up all the time. I'm one of the people that likes to have the least pluged in.

Do you think it would be better for me just to get one single larger hdd as my main drive, and use my spare 500gb hdd just to store music and movies on? Does a RAID 1 really affect the performance enough to be noticable?

The performance of RAID1 is comparable to that of a single drive. I think RAID is a headache for most home users which is why I don't like them there.

I like having 2 drives, 1 for the OS and other losable stuff and one for your real data. It's also good to have a periodic backup of your data somewhere else, be it external drive or DVD or something else.

You can use 1 big drive, and a lot of people do, but there is always the chance that it fails. That chance is still there with a data only drive too, most people don't think about it but whatever way you decide to go, having a regular backup is one of the smartest things you can do.

I figure putting the os and other program related infomation on one drive and my music, movies on other. If the movie one fails it's not a total loss. At the moment I always back up pictures and important information to my external when ever I download them. Usually when I need to download pics its a big download, I take alot of landscape pictures. I also transfer game saves at the same time to the external. I just kept reading alot about RAID and figured I wanted to do everything the best way for my first build. That's why I always ask the forum first, this is a good place for experinced information. Thanks for the replays too.
