New Build in January, or wait for Bulldozer?

I'm not guaranteed to have all the money next month, More than Likely February since I will be getting some cash on the 31st.

Is Bulldozer going to be a big step up from AMD's current lineup- I don't know if it would be worth the wait.
 
It will supposedly be a large step, but we don't know exactly when it'll be released. Llano, an evolution of the current line of processors, will be out in the first half of 2011, and I think Bulldozer will be sometime after that.
 
So is it a safe bet to expect bulldozer Q2 Or Q3? I would rather not wait for Q3, but Q3 would give me a lot of time to save. By then my Current Computer will probably be dead, though.
 
I think saving up is your best wisest choice. 2011 promises to bring a slew of next generation tech and if you can wait until Q3 you'll have a much, much better look at the proverbial PC tech landscape. Plus prices will either have stabilized or even dropped.

Have there been any leaks of possible processors?

They will be AM3+. Current processors will fit in AM3+ motherboards, but not the other way around.

It's also rumored that they may be releasing new Thuban chips with 9MB of L3 cache.

edit: Llano will be socket FM1...AMD is moving away from ZIF sockets, apparently.


Also, I did some more digging and apparently they're trying to launch them both by Q2 2011.

So... building a computer now... it would be more useful to save up for the Am3+ board in Q2-Q3 '11. In the mean time just get a Am2+ board to tide over to then?

If that laptop in your sig still works, I'd just hook an external monitor up to it and use it till then. The more you save now, the better it'll be later on.

If you want to build it now, there wouldn't be much point in using AM2+ anyway...AM3 builds are cheaper at this point, and you wouldn't have to buy new RAM when you upgrade.
 
well, I already have DDR2 layin around unopened and a Sempron Am2+. Just lacking a working board.
The laptop works on occasion. Just hit and miss, think its a hdd failure coming. or GPU problems.
 
I'm starting to wonder if I should get my old P4 System in working order...

I'm not sure if the Motherboard works, or the processor works.

Well if you already have a Sempron and DDR2 then yeah, you might as well go ahead and make a computer out of it. You can make it into an HTPC or something later, lol. Are you thinking of making an entire cheap computer, or buying the case/psu/dvd/hdd for your main rig now and using those parts as placeholders?

If you can get the P4 rig working with a half decent GPU, it should be fine for web browsing and whatnot. Maybe even light gaming, like TF2 or something. Is something wrong with the one in your sig?
 
I'm looking forward to the bulldozer system coming out. It means they will likely lower the costs on previous generation cpu's thus reducing my project costs by a fair amount. I'm almost done with the build, so hopefully the cpu's hit the market before I buy mine. Guess i'll just have to sit on my hands for awhile!

I got a 550 watt PSU alrready, DVDRW drive is in the mail for my burnt out HP (ordered before the mobo failure). The HDD will be bough t wheb I get the case and MOBO, so the Am2+ will just be placeholder.

If you need a procesor and its 478 pin P4, then I have one that you can use.
 
Well, My "Sig Rig" has been running hotter than usual. Plus, Sometimes it won't even turn on. As In I press the power button, and nothing happens. It always posts if it turns on.

I'm wondering if it is the power supply.

But about the P4 Rig. I'm not sure what works and what doesn't. It would need a new PSU and RAM. The processor might work, and the motherboard might work.

But wouldn't it be more cost effective to just build a cheap Sempron 140 system?

EDIT: I think the Processor is socket 478.
The PC is from '05.

if it uses DDR, I can help you out with that also, But I don't have a PSU that I can let go that will fit a ATX case.
