New build is up and running, its just missing a light!

My new build is working, so thanks to the people that helped me out on various threads regarding the build.

I cut a window out in the Antec 300 case, and it looks good, but could do with something to light the inside up. What I have in mind is either a blue or white light that I can switch off when I please without having to open the case up, or, even better, could control software wise. I definitely do not want it on constantly!

Any such lights exist?

Yeah, you can get cold cathode or LED strips, buy a switch that you mount in one of your bays, hook up the strips to that, and there you go :) check www.newegg.com for that.
 
Drill out a few holes in the side panel (if you haven't already) and mount for e.g. 120x120 side panel fan for better cooling. Fan could have some LEDs mounted into it already :)

As to the lights to a case, yes, they are available. Check out for example this website; http://www.crazypc.com/products/casemods/lighting_main.htm

All of the LED lights can be connected to a power supply in your PC as all of them (including fans) have 12v power.

You mentioned desiring software controlled case lights and there is now something I recently came across called the Computer Color Cannon that does what you want and more and all it requires is a USB port (or mobo to USB adapter to put it in a pc case) and the driverless software runs on recent Windows OS's. The light is made up of 30 super bright mini high intensity 100,000+ hour LED's and it is only about 2 inches by 2 inches diameter so it is pretty small compared to other light control options that require a large controller board. There is manual light control via a GUI where you can click a color to set the light color similar to AlienFX, there are modes like lava lamp and pulsing, you can turn the light on/off via a timer, and also iTunes and WinAmp visualization plug-ins are available so the light changes color/flashes to the beat of music.

I prefer LEDs since you don't have to worry about dealing with high voltages (cold cathode can be 600-800 volts!), the LEDs have MUCH longer life, and LEDs barely put off any heat. Cold cathode definitely puts out a lot more light though. It all depends on personal preference as well as space considerations among other things.

I was searching around for case light threads and came across this one and saw the OP asking about wanting software control of the LEDs and nobody answered that question for him and since I recently saw the color cannon thing I thought it may still interest them or someone else. It has only been 3 months, at least my response brought benefit to the thread instead of your complaining sentence for it "being too old".
 
It didn't bring any benefits as the author did not write back after my post which was on the 22nd of January. And where are we now? 26th May
 
Maybe they just forgot about posting. Also, other people read these threads too so maybe they had similar questions that could then be answered here. I know when I have a question about computers I search forums first to see if my question has already been answered, I was just trying to help out and wasn't expecting to have someone get upset over responding to a post and contributing to the forums...
 
You got upset, you wouldn't have taken the time to respond otherwise. Sure the response may not be useful to the OP but it might benefit someone else now or in the future. Like I mentioned before many people search forums for questions they have and since the OP's original question asking about software controlled LEDs was never answered I mentioned something I have seen before and they may not have. I am done wasting my time and other peoples time having this dialog that is bringing zero benefit to the thread, good day sir and hopefully you find something worthwhile to complain about in the future instead of just wasting a lot of peoples time.
