New build (my first from scratch), questions.

Right now, I'm working with an Asus P5K-E w/WiFi/AP motherboard, 2x1GB of PC6400 OCZ RAM, my GeForce 8500 GT, and an E6750. The thing actually posts which is more than I'd hoped for.

However, it says "CPU fan error! System halted" after posting, because I have no PWM fan plugged in. I can get into the BIOS by plugging in a PWM fan but I can't find the option to disable this self-check. I have a Zalman HSF, so it's using a 3-pin connecter instead of a PWM control.

Could someone tell me how to disable this warning? I'm sure I'm not the first with this motherboard to use an after-market cooler on the CPU.

I have more questions :), but this is the most pressing at the moment. Thanks.

First off how do you like Vista?

Secondly I have that exact MB w/ an after market HSF. The only thing that i can think of if you have that error than it probably means that your CPU is in danger of over-heating. This most likely means that your fan isn't even running or you didn't apply the thermal compound. one last possibility is that the heatsink is not installed properly. If these are not the reasons then i can't help you.

The problem has changed a bit, for the better. Now, instead of locking me out of the system, it prompts me to press F1 to continue. Still an annoyance. My friend suggested to turn off RPM monitoring in the BIOS but I can't seem to find that.

I like Vista. I hate certain parts, like User Account Control and the indexing service but these can be disabled. It really wasn't that big of a change for me from XP to Vista.

About my CPU, it's running at 18C according to the BIOS, and the fan is at about 2400 RPM. The problem is, it's a 3-pin fan, i.e. it's plugged into the motherboard in a chassis fan port. The 4-pin port on the mobo where a PWM fan would be plugged in is empty, so the mobo is reading 0RPM for the CPU fan and thus giving me the error.

edit: To be specific, it's a Zalman using a FanMate 2.

In case anyone else was having this problem with a similar motherboard, I corrected it by setting the CPU fan RPM monitor in hardware monitor to "ignore".
